Business Challenges

  • High Security Risks

Viruses, accidental deletions, and other unintended or malicious operations cost organizations dearly. Public agency, finance, medicine, and education sectors are required to archive data for regulatory compliance.

  • Costly Local Builds

Building your own backup centers involves significant operating costs from equipment room maintenance, power consumption, cooling, and more. However, these costly resources are underutilized.

  • Time-Consuming Expansions

Generally, it takes 3 to 6 months to complete your IT infrastructure procurement and construction. This long build time reduces flexibility to respond to ever-changing business dynamics and data growth.

  • Complicated O&M

Mixing backup and archive software, servers, network devices, tape libraries, and other components from multiple vendors result in a complicated IT system requiring highly trained IT professionals to perform even routine O&M.

Backing Up Local Data to the Cloud

Introduction

The service and backup systems are deployed in the enterprise data center, and service data is backed up to HUAWEI CLOUD. This solution eliminates upfront costs, facilitates system expansions, and enhances data reliability.

Cost Control
Storage capacity is charged on a per-use basis. Two storage classes (Standard and Infrequent Access) are available to keep hot data on faster disks and cold data on slower but much cheaper disks. Data can be automatically moved among the two storage classes to control storage costs. Data deduplication and compression reduce bandwidth consumption to further control total data backup costs.

Elastic Expansion
Storage resources can be linearly expanded to nearly infinite capacity. Say goodbye to planning just the right level of storage space for the indeterminate future.

Robust Reliability
Data Encryption Workshop (DEW) encrypts data using AES 256-bit symmetric keys. Data has multiple copies stored in multiple data centers. Data durability is as high as 99.999999999% and data availability as high as 99.99%.

Backing Up Tiered Data to the Cloud

Introduction

The backup management server is deployed on the cloud, and the media server is deployed in the enterprise data center. This solution allows backup and restoration of data both locally and from the cloud.

Two-level Data Storage
Backup data is stored in two levels. Data is stored locally for short periods (for 3 to 7 days, for example) and on the cloud for longer periods (for 30 days, for example). If the production system fails, local data backups are used for quick restoration; if a disaster occurs, cloud data backups are used for restoration.

Cost Control
Three storage classes (Standard, Infrequent Access, and Archive) are available to keep hot data on faster disks and cold data on slower but much cheaper disks. Data can be automatically moved among the three storage classes to control storage costs. Local backup and restoration can reduce the recovery time objective (RTO) down to minutes.

Security
Triple data encryption, including backup software client-side encryption, in-flight encryption, and storage-side encryption, alleviates from data security worries.

DR Drills

Introduction

Service tests or drills can be conducted by restoring data from local or cloud backups. Afterwards, used resources can be released, reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).

Reduced TCO

You can use Image Management Service (IMS) to store service system images on the cloud. With these images, you can deploy a service system on the cloud and conduct service tests or drills without impacting ongoing production. Cloud backups can be used to restore the latest service data. After the tests or drills are complete, resources can be released to reduce TCO.

Maximized Service Continuity

Data can be restored locally or from the cloud. To protect against unintentional deletion and viruses, data can be restored using local backups, and RTO can be cut down to minutes. To protect data against disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, a service system can be created on the cloud and data can be restored to the new service system, with an RTO of hours.

Archiving Local Data to the Cloud

Introduction

Data is archived from the enterprise data center to HUAWEI CLOUD through a storage gateway, ensuring regulatory compliance. Compared with tape libraries, cloud storage delivers higher reliability and lower TCO.

Cost Control
OBS Archive is cost-effective. It is an alternative to physical tape libraries, freeing enterprises from complicated operations such as tape library maintenance, tape management, and manual data transmission.

Robust Security
Backup data is protected at 99.999999999% durability. Client-side encryption, in-flight encryption, and storage-side encryption enhance data security.

Solution Advantages

  • High Reliability

Fine-grained restoration reduces the RTO to minutes. Backup data is protected with a durability of 99.999999999%. Client-side encryption, in-flight encryption, and storage-side encryption enhance data security.

  • Minimized TCO

The pay-per-use storage option means zero upfront and maintenance costs. Two storage classes (Standard and Infrequent Access) help you keep costs down while ensuring access to data at appropriate speed. Data can be automatically moved among the two storage classes to facilitate storage cost control.

  • Elastic Expansion

Resources are allocated and expanded on demand. You can focus on their businesses without concerning with capacity expansion.

  • Easy Management

Local and cloud backups are centrally managed. You can easily purchase compute, storage, and network resources on a per-service basis and do not need to assign dedicated personnel to maintain the layout.

Recommended Services

  • Object Storage Service
OBS replaces traditional tape libraries with economical, secure, and reliable storage services that support auto scaling to meet the requirements of enterprise data backup and archive scenarios.
  • Data Express Service
Data Express Service (DES) is a TB- or PB-scale data transmission service. If the amount of data to be backed up or archived is large, for example, 10 TB data, using a 20 Mbit/s network, it would still take 62 days to transmit the entire batch. However, if you use DES to transmit the data, the required time will be significantly reduced, and the costs will be decreased by up to 80%.
  • Direct Connect
If the backup and restore services have high network bandwidth requirements, for example, over 80 Mbit/s, Direct Connect is recommended to connect the enterprise data center and HUAWEI CLOUD, ensuring faster connection with less latency.
